Down In It

Well, I'm here. I'll put up a big post on my trip at some point when I have the time and energy, but suffice it to say it was a worthwhile experience, and way cooler than I would have thought previously, except for the ass cramps.

On the other hand, New Haven's kinda sucking, for a whole lot of reasons. Yesterday was sheer fun, as I pulled into town, immediately got lost for a couple of hours trying to find places, get to campus, get lost on campus, go back out looking for a supposedly easy to find hotel, get lost more, come back to campus, go to orientation, go out, find the first hotel I can (the Marriott at Yale, as it happens), and crash for the night. Today involved a lot of getting myself set up on computer systems (took forever), getting my ID card (easy), and trying to find somewhere to both stay for the night (easy once I figured out where it was) and for the year (hard, but I now have phone numbers to call tomorrow).

I have, as it happens, a fairly interesting problem, in that I could not register for classes until I got here, and of course they're all closed, except ILS 503, which I need. However, ILS 501, which is required for pretty much everything, is also closed, all three sections of it. So I've begged and pleaded with professors, and am now on two seperate waiting lists to get in. So right now I have one class, and I'm not happy at all about that.

Also, while SCSU's campus is pretty nice, and I can assume Yale's is as well, New Haven's a freaking slum, or at least looks like one. Run down and abandoned brick buildings do not contrast well with small and fading wooden houses and small, narrow, strangely angled streets that may not have been paved since Reagan was President. None of this is made more attractive by the fact that it's dumping rain pretty much constantly.

Also, CT drivers are freaking crazy. There's nothing like being honked at for being .5 seconds in going after the light turns green, while somebody's inventing a right turn lane for themselves, and somebody's parked on the street with all his doors open, calmly standing around as if nobody's going to hit his ass. Even had a guy stop in the middle of the road and stand around talking with people last night. These folks are pretty special.

All in all, not having a whole lot of fun just yet.
