| Viper SR |
| The Viper SR has its origins in the Battle of Tukayyid, when
then-Star Commander Siegel had his previous mech, a Nova, shot out
from under him by ComGuard artillery. Back at the repair bay, all that
was available was an engineless Viper and the 270 XL from a destroyed
Shadow Cat. Cobbling together a mech from the rubble, Siegel went back
into action with a slower but up gunned Viper, which served as his
mech until it was destroyed in the ComGuard ambush that ended Siegel's
tour on Tukayyid.
The modern Viper SR gives back some of the speed lost in Star Colonel Siegel's original mech by mounting a 280 XL engine. Unfortunately, 280 XLs are rare. The current crop of Viper SRs have been refitted with traded engines meant for Nova Cat Omnimechs, but future resupply is somewhat in doubt, which is slightly odd for a unit based on the idea of limited resupply. |
| Capabilities |
| The Viper SR used by the 17th Raven Striker Cluster differs
significantly in weapons loadout from the Ghost Bear version, which
Star Colonel Siegel has been known to call everything from
"nonsensical" to "junk."
The Primary configuration is intended for long range support and looks almost exactly like an undergunned, faster Adder Prime. It mounts twin large lasers guided by a targeting computer, with a token flamer as a short range weapon. Three heat sinks are added to keep the mech from overheating too far. The A configuration is well-suited for any range, with a PPC and three medium lasers tied into a targeting computer, backed up by an SRM 2, with an extra double heat sink to control the heat issues. This configuration is a popular light mech hunter, and many mechwarriors swear by it over the primary configuration. The B configuration serves as a scout mech, replacing the PPC of the A model with an extended-range large laser. It also replaces one the medium lasers for a TAG pod, and adds both an active probe and ECM. The C configuration of the Viper SR is set up for close support. Four medium pulse lasers and a small laser are tied into a targeting computer, supported by a Streak SRM 4 rack. This version is similar to the A configuration of the original Viper, only with larger weapons. Equipped for fire support missions, the D configuration carries a pair of LRM 15 launchers equipped with Artemis IV and fueled by three tons of ammunition. In the eventuality that enemy forces get too close, the mech is left with only a medium and small laser as backup. Created to satisfy demands for longer battlefield life and greater short range protection, the E configuration Viper SR switches out both LRM 15s for 10 racks, adding a pair of medium lasers. The F variant, much like the C variant of the old Viper, is designed as a city fighter, although such warfare is somewhat rare for Clan Snow Raven. Learning from the excesses of the Viper C, the new F configuration mounts a large pulse laser as a main weapon, backed up a pair of medium pulse lasers and an extended-range medium laser. For vehicle and infantry killing, the F configuration mounts four machine guns, but only a half ton of ammunition. Rounding off the mech is an active probe. The G variant, developed after recent trials of possession for Clan Coyote's advanced tactical missiles, takes the E variant Viper SR and simply replaces both LRM 10s with ATM 6 racks, along with the ammunition. This variant is only in limited use, mainly as a test bed for the feasibility of the new system. |
