| The Hall of Fame |
| Being the chronicle of my attempt to play every Civ 3 and Play the
World Civ and gain a Hall of Fame entry before the arrival of Conquests
added new civs to play.
My criteria were simple: Play at least one game through to a win or loss with the civ. Use of the Unique Unit wasn't a criteria, though in most games I at least tried, with a few exceptions. The list is a bit deceptive: It does not list games before about July of 2002. I played plenty of games before that date, but wrote few if any details down, and lost my original Hall of Fame in a computer migration. I'll reference a few of those games, but they don't show up for the obvious reasons. And now, for the Hall of Fame:
I have played an entirety of two Roman games. One was the original tutorial, the other was RBCiv Epic 31, which this is. As I note in the report, this is sort of odd, since I was a fanatic Rome player in Civ 2 and CTP, as a real life history student, Rome is one my main areas of study. Among other things, Epic 31 introduces the famous Flunkius.
I've played more Egypt games than I care to count, mostly in the original Civ 3. The sole exception is my failed (and unreported) attempt at Epic 35. I was at one time a fanatic Egypt player, for obvious reasons - they're one of, if not the, strongest civs. One of these games, likely the first one, is the subject of a fictionalized writeup I did called the Chronicles of Egypt. Heavily modded with a custom mod of my own design, this was one of the very last games I played both with that mod and at Regent level before I became involved in the Epics. The other game is notable solely because it is the subject of the single greatest AI assault I have ever seen, and interestingly enough one of the most belligerent games I've been in. Also heavily modded with the same mod. The details, such as they are, of that game are here.
My sole Greek game was also my very first Epic, my very first Monarch game, and my first Always War game, not to mention my first unmodded game in months. After Epic 14, I left behind both Regent and modded games in favor of the very cool Epics.
My one game that I remember as Babylon was also my very first One City Challenge game, which can be found on the page I have for such things.
Both of my German games were Epics, part of the same Epic, in fact. Epic 18 was a dual potluck - same civ, chosen at random from the available ones, two different maps, two victory conditions based on civ.
My one game as the Russians was my second Epic, my second Monarch game. Epic 15 was pretty different - a space race under Communism, with some interesting variant rules.
I actually have two China games. Epic 27 is the later one, my second Always War game, which ended when I knew I would lose. As I never actually retired, it doesn't appear here. The one that does appear here was a Kal-El's world map game, one of my first PTW games I believe, which turned into myself fighting titanic world wars with Greece in the Modern Age before launching my ship.
The listed game is my failed attempt at Epic 36, which ended in an Iroquois sneak attack which decimated me. It remains unreported on, because there's nothing much to report. I've had a couple other games as America back in the original game, but remember nothing of them.
Recently played solely for this list, Riders on the Storm is my attempt at a heavy warmonger game.
The infamous Tonto Succession Game, played in original Civ 3, on Regent. I'm Marius. This was my very last Regent game before moving to the Epics, and my first Succession Game. Far later, in November of 2003, I came back to the game, and completed it in PTW. India: One of three unlisted ones. I have partial games in Sirian's Sandbox and Epic 2, and an actual completed game from the original which ended in me winning the space race.
This is, I think, the single hardest game of Civ I have ever played. Epic 33 wasn't fun in the usual sense of the word. It was grueling, me against the world, and very draining, but oh so satisfying at the end. I count it as one of, if not my finest Civ 3 achievements.
Other than being an Aztec space race game, I don't remember much about this game. I believe I expanded to fill up my continent, might have run over the Iroquois, and played a totally peaceful builder game. Zulu: Another of the unlisted ones. A co-op hotseat multiplayer game, where my partner was Japan. He ran over the Vikings with warriors (!) in the 3500 BC range, got excellent land, and more or less militarily dominated the game. I ran over my neighbors Babylon and Egypt, and helped militarily against the Mongols. Had we bothered to finish, I would have lost to a domination victory.
It should be understood that in my Warlord and Regent days, I was an enormous Iroquois player. Almost as much of an Iro player as I was an Egypt player, in fact. So I filled this slot many, many times over. Still, I have a couple of recent games worth reporting. I wasn't around for Epic 10, but I played it anyway, way later. Munchkin Warriors are very fun, I say. I was around for Epic 37, however. It may, in fact, be the last game of PTW I ever play, as Conquests came out before I got to play it. Munchkin Warriors are still fun.
My other fictionalized game, Rule Britannia, was notable for all sorts of reasons: My only English game, my first domination win, and some serious tech games you'll find about if you read it. Mongols: My other unlisted game, or rather games. Both were co-op multiplayer in the fashion of the Zulu game, but who was going to win the domination victory was a bit more up in the air.
My one and only Spain game is also my one and only Deity game. RBP 10A was, to say the least, quite the intro to Deity.
A solo game of mine, this one was challenging for all sorts of reasons. For one, I had some of the most intense equatorial jungles I have ever seen in any game. Eventually I stumbled my way out of them into some excellent cities, ran over my northern neighbors, the Celts, for more room with berserks, and ended up in a titanic modern war with Mao, the world bully, which allowed me to eke out a diplomatic win.
Honestly, I don't remember this game existing at all. I believe it was a world map game of some sort, but nothing more than that.
My one game as the Celts was the very long but very fun Epic 32. One of very few games I've taken all the way to 2050.
My second One City Challenge, described on my OCC page.
For some reason, I've played a lot of Carthage games. My first ever PTW game was a Carthage game, the Hannibal game listed here, which was an island builder game where I won an easy diplo win. Epic 24 and Epic 25 were quite a bit harder.
My one and only Korean game was a potluck, Epic 21. About my second or third PTW game. |
