Marius, 9/11/02
350 AD (0) - Marius, the descendent of the lines of King Berrio and Marianus II takes the throne of France as King Marius III, having all other claimants...dealt with.  The first thing the second King of France beheld was a map left to him by his predecessor.  There is some pondering as to why Bescanon was founded in the present location, as opposed to one north, the original dot location.  King Marius noted with some pleasure the legions of settlers rushing south to colonize Paradise.  Similarly, the French military was the best it had ever been.  Diplomacy, on the other hand, was not so good.  Everyone was annoyed with the French for some reason or another.  Even worse, they were all giants compared to France.  Scanning the maps again, King Marius prepared to get down to business, when his eyes noticed a city to the east of Orleans.  Huexotla, it was called, and it was not a Persian, or a Babylonian, or an Iroquois city.  Horsemen were directed to scout out this city, and they brought back news of a great chief, Montezuma of the Aztecs.  Montezuma verily oozed gold (500+), and controlled vast territories, but appeared to be a slight step above barbarity, lacking mathematics, polytheism, literature, and the republican form of government.  Seizing the day, King Marius immediately sent ambassadors to the courts of Montezuma to discuss a deal.  In return for 490 rather large sacks of gold and the Aztec world map, Montezuma was introduced to Babylonian and Persian emissaries.  As for the Iroquois, they were invited to contribute 40 sacks of gold and the Iroquois world map to the French treasury.  Of note to the King, Paradise had already been fully explored:

Declaring an auspicious start to his reign, King Marius threw a great celebration in Paris, then settled down to exploiting his windfall.

360 AD (1) - Xerxes, feeling left out of the proceedings, demands Polytheism.  King Marius erupts in laughter, and the emissary returns to Xerxes to be executed for his failure.  King Marius notes with some annoyance a number of foreign settlers moving towards Paradise.  Chartres constructs a worker, and worker supply being judged sufficient, begins construction of a barracks.  Production in Orleans is changed to a temple, in order to keep the people happy.  Settlers are moved towards Paradise.

370 AD (2) - Workers improve French infrastructure, and settlers move down into Paradise.

380 AD (3) - Paris finishes a barracks and begins construction of another settler.  Rhiems constructs another barracks, and begins construction on a library.

390 AD (4) - Marsielles constructs a barracks and begins construction on a library.  Running dog lackey Iroquois settlers land in Paradise, at one of the very best spots near two large cow herds.  Rouen is founded at the second best spot in Paradise, and more workers are on the way.

400 AD (5) - Horsemen are constructed in Tours, which switches to a spearman to provide a second defender.  Lyons continues to produce horsemen.

410 AD (6) - The foreign Iroquois devils found some city with an unpronouncable name ON TOP OF A COW HERD in Paradise.  King Marius almost dies of laughter.  A horseman moves to the Isthmus of Bescanon, blocking it, but the foreign Iroquois devils still have a galley transporting settler pairs.  (I state again.  Why was Bescanon NOT founded on the isthmus there where it could have blocked it?)

420 AD (7) - Chartres completes a barracks and begins work on a library.  Bescanon completes a warrior and begins a temple.

430 AD (8) - The foreign Iroquois devils found Kawauka and Gougien just below Rhiems.  Quoth the King: "All your base will belong to us."  The foreign Aztec devils found Tepexpan in southern Paradise, in one of the few remaining good spots.  Tours completes a spearman, which is set to guard it, and a warrior is sent to Chartres.  Paris finishes it's somewhat useless settler and begins on another horseman.

440 AD (9) - Much worker movement.

450 AD (10) - As one of his last acts, King Marius orders the foundation of Grenoble near Paris.  Horsemen rush to protect it while it produces spearmen for defense.  The King is found late one night in his bedchamber after complaining of neck pain, clutching a map.  His adopted son, Stormboy, is declared as the third King of France.

Two outstanding things from my turn: I completely forgot that I had two settlers on longterm gotos in Paradise.  Apologies, and countermand them if you wish, although they're going to about the only land that's left, and I don't expect to get it.  I also forgot to get an embassy with Monty, so you might want to deal with that.

The land situation just got VERY bleak.  The AI has entered the starving cannibal piranha phase of its landgrab, and thusly we have settler pairs all over the place.  They can't get past the blockade at Bescanon, but they're there nonetheless.  The eastern desert is going to have useless pit cities all over pretty quick.

I tried to keep military production going where possible, but our science rate is sucking something awful.  We lack libraries totally that I could see, and we're starting to hit the stage where we need to do our own research, and at first civ tech prices, that's a bank breaker.  So I'd be enthused if we could keep my library projects going.  We've got quite a few horses anyway, and I've got Tours on spearmen to produce second defenders for any city that needs them.  We're also six turns out from fuedalism.  Of note, Xerxes needs only Polytheism to complete the ancient age and enter the middle ages, at which point he'll get monotheism for free and pass it on to us.  If need be, selling poly to him might not be a bad plan if we need to get there faster.

Thus, a long term game plan for us.  We rush full speed ahead to knights, trying to save enough gold for some massive knight upgrades when we get there.  At that point, we slam into Hiawatha.  Take all those crappy little cities in our territory, and try to cut away some of his better stuff.  We do, however, need to watch out for the 5+ archers cruising around lower Paradise.  If we can pull off a good war against Hiawatha, we ought to be set again for a little bit, until we can build up and do it again.  We're going to need some infrastructure though, especially libraries and marketplaces, so don't hesitate to build those instead of mil units.  We're rich NOW, but we're pushing the limit pretty hard.

Stormboy, 9/12/02
...and our story continues, as King Stormboy ascends the throne of France.

450 AD: King Marius hasn't even been buried, as the people of Chartres convert his library to a marketplace. The philistines!

460 AD: We've started building libraries in Tours and Lyons. That should impress the neighbours :). The Iroquois are willing to supply us with pink paint, in exchange for a few barrels of French wine. Great, more pink stuff all across the country! :)

470 AD: The city of Orleans will get an aqueduct. A productive city like this, should be allowed to grow much larger. We've established an embassy in the Aztec capitol of Tenochtitlan. Finally we'll get some inside information on these strange islanders.

480 AD: Our neighbours drop off some scrolls about something called "Monotheism" at our Great Library.

Our capitol, Paris, gets its own marketplace.

490 AD: Rheims is another promising city that needs to expand, it will also get an aqueduct. Rouen starts training more workers.

500 AD: The Babylonians are building "Hanging Gardens". Whatever for, we wonder.

510 AD: People in the city of Avignon have started building a galley. France will sail the seas at last! Now that our noblemen have grasped the concept of Feudalism, our scientists can start teaching them some finer manners. Ah Chivalry! Opening doors for ladies, pulling chairs from under them (or something like that ;). I'm sure there's a military use for it as well...

520 AD: What's up with the young people of Marseilles, running around with their Babylonian hairdos? Before you know it, they'll start wearing red tunics and those ugly red sandals. A big, pink cathedral in the middle of their town square should remind them of were they are. :)

530 AD: The city of Dijon is founded in the south of the Paradise peninsula.

540 AD: The people go about their business.

550 AD: Hammurabi of the Babylonians tries to bully us into giving him the secret of Feudalism. We laugh in his face (while touching wood). It's not a good year for 'Ham': an unknown people, called the English, have finished their version of the Hanging Gardens first. A marketplace is planned in the center of Tours.

King Stormboy is run over by a speeding ox cart and dies after a poorly performed leg amputation. He leaves no heir, the throne of France is up for grabs...

Some further comments:
- For our science needs, I've gone with libraries in the border cities, and marketplaces inland. The extra income should give us roughly as much science as going all libraries, but with more financial flexibility.
- All other known civs are republics. If we ever need to go to war with them, cutting them off from their luxuries should hurt big time.
- We've still got a settler running around, I've started him on his way to Avignon, where we're building a galley.

King Berrio III ascends to the throne after killing all the surviving relatives of King Stormboy.

Unfortunately King Berrio III's reign was completely uneventful, so here's just a brief summary of what happened:

560 AD (1) - Chartres starts library. Paradise starts library.

570 AD (2) - Yawn

580 AD (3) - Grenoble starts temple. Iroquois are building Art of War. Paris hurries market place.

590 AD (4) - Babs are buillding Sun Tzu. Rouen produces worker, starts temple.

600 AD (5) - Lyons starts market place.

610 AD (6) - Orleans finishes aqueduct starts marketplace.

620 AD (7) - Civil disorder in Tours, give them entertainment.

630 AD ( 8 ) - Chartres starts cathedral. Civil disorder in Besancon, governor told to manage moods.
Dijon starts temple. Avignon starts library.

640 AD (9) - Chivalry completed, start on theology. Rheims completes aqueduct, starts market place.
Upgrade several horsemen to knights.

650 AD (10) - Aztecs are building Sun Tzu. Upgrade some more horsemen.

It turned out that not all of King Stormboy's relatives had been exterminated and King Berrio III is hacked to death by the newly created knights and used as fertilizer for the fields.
Marius, 9/16/02
Well, that could have gone better.

650 AD (0) - After the death of King Berio III by the relatives of King Stormboy, massive rioting and popular opinion drove said relatives out of Paris and appointed a new king, a relative of Marius III who took the throne as King Marianus III.  What he saw was good.  Chivalry had been reached, and with it, knights.  Resolving to build the French into the world's foremost military power, Marianus upgraded horsemen into knights in Chartres and Orleans, and slashed science funding as far as it would go to make money for still more upgrades.  Not neglecting France's defenses, Marianus bought hordes of new pikes for the spearmen defending in Orleans, Tours, Rhiems, and Marsielles.

660 AD (1) - Hiawatha gets snippy about some unit or another in Iroquois territory.  We promise to leave, and he goes away content.  Little does he know... Tours finishes a marketplace and begins work on a barracks.  Chartres upgrades another knight and a pikeman.

670 AD (2) - Hiawatha thinks we should trade him wine for nothing.  He is told to go away, and immediately goes from polite to annoyed.  He has chosen unwisely.  News from Persia indicates that they are building Sun Tzu's Art of War.  A horseman in Rhiems is upgraded to a knight.  French forces begin moving towards Iroquois lands.

680 AD (3) - Rhiems upgrades another knight.  Our forces move into position.

690 AD (4) - Montezuma comes demanding Monotheism, our territory map, and 7 sacks of gold.  He is told where he can stick his demands, and he runs off, tail between his legs.  Paris goes into disorder as news comes from Persia that the Persians are building the Sistine Chapel.  Two more knights are upgraded in Chartres, and French knights begin moving into final positions for an Iroquois war.

700 AD (5) - Orleans produces a marketplace and begins work on another knight.  Tours produces a barracks and begins producing pikes.  Forces of knights are now in position and ready to attack the Iroquois.  Another knight is upgraded in Marsielles, and a pikeman in Paris.

The northern attack force, who will blitz Awkwesasne:

The western attack force, tasked with taking Allegheny:

The southern attack force, tasked with taking the Iroquois colonies and then reinforcing our own:

King and country readied for war.  Vive le France!

710 AD (6) - Bescanon's production changed to a pikeman.  Rouen's production changed to a pikeman.  Hiawatha refuses to pay all he owns for continued peace, and French knights thunder across the borders, stopping just short of Alleghany and waiting.

720 AD (7) - Hiawatha takes offense to our invasion and asks us to leave, upon which we declare war.  Paris produces a library and begins working on a cathedral.  Lyons produces a marketplace and starts on pikemen.  Bescanon produces a pikeman and returns to working on a temple.  Awkwesasne falls to French knights, and there is much rejoicing.  Kawauka in the south falls, promoting one knight to veteran but killing another.  King Marianus curses the uselessness of regular units.  An archer outside Kewauka is attacked, but kills our attacking archer just short of being killed itself (1 hp).  Goiguen defeats our attack by a veteran knight, who retreats.  Alleghany falls, promoting a knight to veteran.

730 AD (8) - Our 1 hp knight outside Kewauka is attacked by the wounded French archer, who loses, promoting our men to veterans.  Browsing through some scrolls in the Great Library, King Marianus comes across scrolls showing new engineering techniques, which are immediately adopted.  Going back, Marianus stumbles across more scrolls containing works on Theology.  Marseilles produces a cathedral, and begins working on more knights.  Resistance in Awkwesasne and Kewauka ends.  Paradise builds a library and begins work on a harbor.  Archers in Tours attack Iroquois mounted warriors crossing the borders, dropping them to 1 hp but losing an archer in the process.

740 AD (9) - The Iroquois viciously counterattack, failing at Tours but winning after a massive battle at Alleghany.  Rhiems builds a marketplace and begins work on a knight.  Various battles across Iroquois lands generally go in France's favor.

750 AD (10) - The French northern field army (4 odd knights) is utterly destroyed by Iroquois Munchkin Warriors.  Chartres build a cathedral and begins work on knights.  Grenoble finishes a temple and begins work on a library.  Goigouen finally falls to French forces.  The remnants of the northern French forces hole up in Awkwesasne and prepare for a large counterattack.  In news that shocks the whole of France, King Marianus III is killed in his bedchamber by an Iroquois assassin, who is promptly caught and bloodily dismembered.

Advice for the next ruler is simple: Seek peace.  We're getting steamrolled BAD by those freaking Munchkin Warriors.  We're doing ok in the south, but our northern knights are dropping like flies, and there's no way they can be replaced at anything like the rate we're using them up.

Stormboy, 9/16/02
...following the death of King Marianus III, and the flight of his allies from Paris, the Stormboy clan seizes the opportunity to get back in power. After a short but violent insurrection, the leader of the Stormboyite rebellion is crowned King of France. Thus begins the reign of King Stormboy II...

interregnum (750 AD): In the besieged city of Akwesane, a small regiment of knights is holding out against a large Iroquois force of mounted warriors, swordsmen and archers. King Stormboy wants peace, but the fight must continue until the Iroquois are prepared to pay reasonable war reparations. Should we lose Akwesane however, getting a favorable settlement with the Iroquois would be difficult. Akwesane must not fall! Our knights charge and defeat injured archer and a mounted warrior units. They brace themselves for what is about to come...

760 AD: The Iroquois cleverly retreat their injured mounted warriors as fresh troops charge from Allegheny. Two mounted warrior units are defeated. Then the Iroquois change tactics and bring in 4 swordsman regiments. The injured defenders fortify. How much longer can they hold out?
Near Grenoble, one of our archer units is ambushed and destroyed by Iroquois snipers. A swordsman regiment storms out of Lyons and defeats the Iroquois archers, before they can attack the poorly defended city of Grenoble.

770 AD: The Iroquois swordsmen try to charge Akwesane, but their attempt fails miserably. They bring in 3 more swordsman regiments and an archer unit from Allegheny. The few knights that are still reasonably healthy manage to surprise the Iroquois reinforcements with a brave charge. Two Iroquois regiments are wiped out. The battle of Akwesane is starting to turn in our favor.
Our atempt to take Kente goes less favorably, as our veteran knight regiment is defeated by a determined spearman unit.
Iroquois saboteurs have destroyed the road to our mine in Rouen, luckily this wasn't our only source of iron.
The Aztecs have started building the Sistine Chapel.

780 AD: The terrible losses at Akwesane finally bring the Iroquois to the negotiation table. This time they're ready to pay up! They will give us 13 sacks of gold every ten years, for the next 2 centuries. 6 sacks of gold will be paid immediately.

790 AD: The cities of France change their production to defensive units and peacetime improvements.
The Iroquois start on their version of the Sistine Chapel.

800 AD: In an attempt to profit from France's post-war weakness, the Persians suddenly demand 62 sacks of gold and a map of our territory! No king of the Stormboy clan has ever given in to extortion, Stormboy II is no exception. We refuse and the Persians promptly declare war!

810 AD: France reluctantly changes back to a wartime economy. Two of our knight regiments gather outside the Persian settlement of Ghulaman, just east of Paris.

820 AD: The attack against Ghulaman has started. Two defending spearman units are defeated. Two more knight regiments prepare to engage the enemy.

830 AD: The last defenders of Ghulaman, 2 archer regiments, are defeated. A galley in the harbor is destroyed. Ghulaman is burned to the ground.

840 AD: Paradise has completed a harbor. From there we can trade with the Aztecs. We make a deal with them to supply us with spices in exchange for 275 sacks of gold.

850 AD: Attempts to talk to the Persians fail. A diplomatic delegation, headed by King Stormboy II himself, was supposed to meet with the Persians several weeks ago. Nothing has been heard from them since. The king is feared dead...

So, the good news is that we've made peace with the Iroquois, the bad news is that we're at war with Persia ;). We've hurt them quite a bit already, hopefully we'll get a good settlement from them once they're prepared to talk. They'll probably try to land a couple of Immortals near one of our least defended cities. With a bit of luck we can settle this before they attack.
I was contemplating getting the Babs in on our side, but I'm gonna leave that decision up to you Berrys :).

That spices deal with the Aztecs wasn't all that great. The increase in revenue from the markets is a bit disappointing. The extra happiness is nice though, makes it easier to shift troops away from cities without them falling into civil disorder.
I've kept the science rate at 0, but that's gonna have to change: next turn we'll get education (and invention), so our free tech ride is over. :(
We've got lots of gold now, I couldn't quite decide what to do with it. I considered rushing units, but in the end I didn't. Maybe save it for upgrades?

Here's our glorious knights attacking the godless Persians.

Commentary.

I'm impressed.  I thought we were horridly screwed at Akwesasne for sure.  But then it may have been my dismal luck with the RNG coloring things.  War with Persia = not so good, but it's very likely that it won't go anywhere, so no worries.

As to what to do with the cash... I'm torn.  I'd really like to see the Iroquois Wars Part II, maybe this time with somebody other than me leading the negotiations with the RNG.  On the other hand, we sure could use some more city infrastructure.  So here's a plan...

Militarily: How are our knight forces doing numerically?  IMHO, our core cities with rax[1] could stand to crank out a few knights, at least until we run into the free unit pop cap for Monarchy (check the mil advisor if you have no idea what I just said).  As we get closer to that, disbanding some of those more or less useless archers might be a good idea.  Or if we're right next to invention, turn them into longbows.

Depending on our numbers, I see the next war going something like this: We send 5 or so units down south to deal with those stray Iroquois colonies, which we want - decent land, and with an FP in Bescanon, they'll be pretty productive as well.  Everything else can make runs at Aleghany or Niagra Falls and kill the Iro army off until they go for peace again.  If we're gonna win this game, we're desperately gonna need more land, and the Iroquois have good land, and it's right there close.  <shrug>

[1] - We really can't afford regulars anymore.  That 3hp crap just kills us dead dead dead.  Most of my combat losses in the Iroquois War were due to 3 hp knights.

Economically, I've mentioned putting our Forbidden Palace in Bescanon, although if we carve out a big enough chunk of the Iroquois it might be better to put it there instead, or move the capitol somewhere like Tours or Chartres.  IIRC, most of our core is doing pretty well on infrastructure, so we can afford to switch them over to knights, or rax and then knights.  That having been said, if there are any marketplaces left unbuilt, those should maybe be rushed in the core.  For the Paradise region, we should maybe think about rushing in temple/courthouse combos and getting the FP up in Bescanon or some other well-located city.  If any of our core is missing cathedrals, we ought to think about those, too, and maybe libraries if we're out of things to do.  Universities only if we have absolutely nothing ELSE to do, except maybe in Marsielles just to keep up with Hammurabbi culturally.
Berrys, 9/17/02
It's next to impossible for us to attack the Persians, or for them to attack us, appart from by sea. Briging in the Babs on our side (and they may not go for it at a reasonable cost) could have one of three longer term effects: either the Babylonians become much stronger, or, the Persians become much stronger, or, they both become much weaker (our best outcome, IMO). My feeling is to steer clear of any military alliances for the time being and hope for peace soon. what does the rest of the panel think?
Marius, 9/17/02
Agreement.  The Persian/Babylonian status quo is pretty well in our favor at this point.  The folks that worry me a lot are the Aztecs, and getting them involved in a war somewhere would be great for us, but a 20 turn military alliance at this point would hurt like hell, IMHO.
Stormboy, 9/17/02
The main reason I suggested getting the Babs involved, is cause I'm slightly worried about the other civs joining the Persians and ganging up on us.
_Marius is right though, keeping the fight against Persia up for another 20 turns is not something to look forward to. I think Persia would slaughter the Babs anyway.
So, unless our situation starts to deteriorate, I agree it's probably best to stay away from military alliances.
Berrys, 9/19/02
The mangled remains of King Stormboy II are found lying in an irrigation ditch - he has been ambushed and killed by some Immortals. General Berrier uses the opportunity to instigate a coup d'etat and is pronounced King by the French military.

860 AD (1) - Out people go about their business. The dastardly Persians attack and sink our galley with the settler in it :(

870 AD (2) - Kente overthrows their rulers and swear allegiance to us, much rejoicing can be heard throughout the Kingdom! Persian Knights are sighted approaching Marseilles. King Berrier orders reinforcements to Marseilles and a division of knights to approach the enemy lines.

880 AD (3) - Attack regular knight with an elite who is killed! :/ Another elite knight kills off remaining Persian knights.

890 AD (4) - Grenoble starts aqueduct. Lyons starts knight. Iroquois forces massing near Tours.

900 AD (5) - Our people go about their business. A new source of iron is found near Orleans by the Royal Surveyors. King Berrier cracks open a case of champagne in celebration.

910 AD (6) - More infrastructure. Goigouen produces pikie, starts temple. Orleans starts library.

920 AD (7) - Paris finishes cathederal and starts on worker to start building mines to increase our production in the city. Paradise starts marketplace. ork continues on a road to Dijon.

930 AD ( 8 ) - A Peace treaty with Persians is negotiated by King Berrier (they give us world map - sadly they are completely broke and technologically behind us)

940 AD (9) - Disaster! The godless people of Akwesasne rebel and revert to Iroquois rule :(

950 AD (10) - Our people go about their business. King Berrier is crushed to death when the Great Library unexpectedly collapses.
Marius, 9/19/02
950 AD (0) - Following the crushing of King Berrier, the King's advisors decide they like ruling an awful lot, and stick a mosaic portrait of King Marianus III on the throne as King Marianus IV.  They then go about their business.  The first order of this is re-arranging the military.  The last remaining archer is upgraded to a longbow unit, and numerous knight units performing useless garrison duties are switched into a field army near Tours.  Noticing the giant surplus of gold in the bank, the internal advisor sees what can be bought.  Rhiems is switched to a cathedral, Grenoble's aqueduct is rushed, Lyons is switched to a cathedral, Marsielles is switched to a courthouse, temples are rushed in Rouen and Dijon, a marketplace is rushed in Paradise, and Avignon is switched to an aqueduct.

960 AD (1) - Hiawatha is furious with us about some troops or another near Akwesasne.  The advisors wonder why he's so furious about a worker.  A wounded Persian knight wanders into our territory, and Iroquois settlers randomly wander around our lands.  Orleans completes a library and begins work on a cathedral.  Paradise finishes a marketplace and begins work on a cathedral.  Rouen finishes it's temple and begins work on a courthouse.  Grenoble's aqueduct is completed and production is shifted to a cathedral.  Dijon's temple is completed and work begins on a courthouse.

A worker is shifted off of roadbuilding near Dijon and sent back to Bescanon to complete infrastructure (why all the two-worker teams?  We're industrious and don't really need that sort of thing.

970 AD (2) - Our scientists discover the secrets of Gunpowder.  It is undecided whether to go the Banking route or the Military Tradition route, and it is eventually decided to go to work on Chemistry.  Marsielles completes a courthouse and begins work on a marketplace.  Bescanon completes a temple and begins work on a courthouse.

There is some slight pause as the internal advisor discovers some misirrigation near Paris and Orleans...

Note the irrigation in the red circle that doesn't provide benefit to anybody at all.  That's like six wasted worker turns we could have been doing something far more beneficial to our civ.  Paradise badly needs workers, frex.  I sort of let this go without comment back when workers were running around randomly irrigating up by where Grenoble is now, and I saved the 12 or so worker turns lost up there by founding Grenoble in the first place, but well, enough is enough, ok?  Watch where you're sending the workers.  There's only a very limited radius (2 squares out) (if you don't know what I'm talking about, ASK!) that gets any benefit whatsoever from being improved, and doing anything outside of that is a complete waste of worker time.  And we're not exactly overflowing with surplus to waste.  On a similar note, we're an industrious civ.  2 worker teams at this point are pretty much wasted effort when we could be improving more land elsewhere.  I note the road near Dijon which didn't need anywhere near that kind of effort, and the mountains near Paradise, which weren't really all THAT needy either.  We now return you to your regularly scheduled Civ game.

Temples are rushbought in Goigouen and Kawauka as well as aqueducts in Avignon and Paradise.

980 AD (3) - Construction begins in Avignon and Paradise on cathedrals.  Both Goigouen and Kawauka begin producing harbors.  Workers are moved.

990 AD (4) - The government comes to a halt as the mosaic is cleaned off.

1000 AD (5) - Wines are sold to the Iroquois for their world map, 20 sacks of gold, and 13 sacks of gold for the next twenty turns.  Babylon has Astronomy but we are unable to trade for it.

1010 AD (6) - Production in the core cities switched from knights to universities.

1020 AD (7) - MMOW.

1030 AD (8) - MMOW.

1040 AD (9) - Word comes that Persopolis has built Sun Tzu's.  From far-off England comes word that Copernicus' Observatory has been built.  The Iroquois and Aztecs switch to Leonardo's Workshop.  Our Aztec spice deal comes up for renewal and is ended.

1050 AD (10) - A minor palace functionary finds out that the ruler of France is in fact a mosaic portrait.  The people of France, unhappy at being duped, rise up and depose the advisors, although the mosaic, being good art, is reinstalled on the wall it came from.

In other news, we've got, uh, problems.  Most of them revolve around the abysmal culture of our civ.  We can go to war, but unless we start razing like fiends, we're going to lose it all.  Thus the idea of going to war with the Iroquois when the wines deal runs out, and razing stuff.

There's another option, however - Babylon.  The Babylonian fringe cities towards us could be taken and immediately razed (they'll revolt otherwise).  A peace deal could then be worked out giving us Astronomy.  We've got tons of mil in comparison, and we're average with everyone else on our continent.  I'd suggest immediately running the Iroquois War Part II, but of course I made that damn wines deal so we can't.  Babylon is a pretty good interm target, though, until we can pick up cavalry and beat up on Hiawatha.

It's either that, or we reverse roles and go 100% infrastructure, revolt to republic, and make due with what we've got.  I'm not really all that happy with that idea, but then I'm not entirely happy with the war idea, either.  In my pessimistic moment I'm having, I'm thinking we can't really win this one.

Berrys, 9/20/02
Yup, we're getting "out-cultured" badly, and falling behind on the science too :(

I often go for the Banking/Economics route and build Wall Street and Smith's Trading Company which does wonders for the economy allowing higher science spending.

Basically, we need more cities and in decent places. Unfortunately we were pretty stuffed from the outset given our starting position.

On the two-man worker teams: I inherited some of them from Stormboy, and personally like two-man teams since they can build a section of road or irrigate in a single turn.  :/
Stormboy, 9/20/02
I'm still thinking about this one. Right now I'm inclined to go with a 2nd Iroquois war, but only after some careful preparation. This time I'd like to start by cutting off their iron and horses first. Ideally, all their strategic resources should be cut at the same time.
I've edited a few screenshots to show what I think would be a good approach. (I hope the links work. I finally sorted out a mix-up about my subscription type with my ISP.)

1) Round the back: A galley lands 2 knights who split up and cut iron & horses.
2) Round the side: A galley lands a knight (or 2) who cuts the road leading to that peninsula. This cuts off their only source of ivory as well.
3) Near the front: Just a simple knight sortie from outside Tours.

After that I think we should press on and beat them down to their last city.

Comments? Thoughts?

Having done some thinking on the subject...

I'd suggest using pikes for the strike forces.  Knights are really expensive, and any units we drop off back there aren't going to be doing much capturing of cities or much else besides camping on resources.  So either a couple of pikes for each galley, or a couple of pikes upgraded to muskets.  In fact, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea.  We've got tons of pikes sitting around, and the four we'd need to go convert is pretty minimal.  And 3/4 m'eers are pretty much invincible fortified on hills and mountains and such.

It might also be worth waiting on astronomy and caravels to do this, but perhaps not.  Time is, as always, of the essence.  And we can definitely afford 3 galleys and 4 pikes/muskets.  Knights, like I said, are bloody expensive though.  Can't go throwing em away.

I like the strike locations, mostly.  I would suggest that the guy who cuts the horse in 1 go and cut off the saltpeter if it's there, though.  Worse than Munchkin Warriors for us are guns.  They get muskets and we'll slow WAY the hell down.

As for 2, I say use a pair of muskets, and land one of them directly on both the ivory and iron squares.  It surefire eliminates both resources without the little problem we'll have if he's got more than one road out of that peninsula, let alone harbors.  Plus the whole fortified muskets in mountains thing gives me the warm fuzzy feeling.

And I'd back up 3 with a m'eer just to camp out on the iron so he doesn't re-road it.

Otherwise, the plan appears good.  I'm rather unsure about if we should go for genocidal slaughter of the Iroquois or keeping the cities, though.  Our culture really bites, and to get this done right we're going to immediately need to rush in temples in captured cities to keep them from flipping elsewhere.  The other thing we'll need to do is immediately starve the hell out of the populace to get the number of foreign nationals down.  If we've got to capture all their cities twice because of flips, this war will really suck.

That having been said, I looked at Babylon again some.  The immediate advantage is that their army is weak compared to ours.  On the downside, their resources are all really hard to get to.  Plus we owe the Iroquois some pain. ;)

Other misc thoughts - We badly need a gold surplus to pull this off.  Off the top of my head we're going to need to be upgrading pikes like mad and rushing culture buildings as well, both of which require lots of cash.  If that should mean that after the war we're required to buy some techs off Babylon, so be it.

Speaking of techs and Babylon, the other continent is at least as advanced as ours.  It might be worthwhile to make suicide runs with our galleys off into the unknown to try and make contact with the other continent.  If we should pick up Astronomy, it ought to be a goal of ours to send out a caravel to explore.  Supposing we can broker contact between both sides, we'll get RICH as hell from it.

Another priority is going to need to be where to stick the Forbidden Palace.  Offhand, I'd call Oka our best bet for it, followed by Salamanca and St Regis.  Post-temple, that's probably the first thing that needs to get started on.  If we can leader rush it, so much the better, though we might want to wait until the war ends in case it flips.
Stormboy, 9/21/02
After the "portrait incident" the nobles of France appoint a member of the house of Stormboy as regent. He will rule until the succession disputes are settled and a suitable heir to the throne is found.

interregnum(1050 AD): The city of Avignon stops building its cathedral and starts working on a galley. Work on the temple in Kente is changed to a galley as well. Three pikemen (in Lyons, Tours and Paris) are promoted to musketeers.

1060 AD: The 3 musketeers :) move towards the western coast. The cathedral in Orleans is finished, musketeer training is started. Marseilles has completed its marketplace and starts building a university.

1070 AD: Lyons has finished its cathedral and starts recruiting knights.

1090 AD: "We Love The King Day" in Lyons :)

1100 AD: Our chemistry research is complete, we're now trying to figure out metallurgy. We sell chemistry to the Persians and the Babylonians: Persia gives us astronomy + banking + 15 gpt + 95g, the Babylonians give navigation + 22 gpt + 9g.
Two great wonders have been completed by other civilizations: Leonardo's Workshop (Aztecs) and the Sistine Chapel (English).

1110 AD: A galley sets sail for the Iroquois lands, on board are 2 musketeers.

1120 AD: Chartres and Rheims start building a bank, Grenoble gets started on a marketplace.

1130 AD: The people of Goigouen are building a courthouse.

1140 AD: Lyons keeps training more knights.

1150 AD: Our 3rd musketeer boards a caravel in Kente, a 4th muskeer is on his way to join him. Tours builds a bank, Kente a temple.

The nobles of France have agreed to crown a young prince from the house of Berry as their new king. Regent Stormboy steps aside.

A few pictures illustrating our sabotage plan (with _Marius' comments taken into account):

A musketeer ready to join his comrade on board a caravel. They'll sail round the side of the Iroquois lands and cut ivory & iron.

Two other musketeers sailing their galley around the back of the Iroquois lands...

...until they reach the pink spot where they disembark and cut iron & horses supply (possibly salpeter as well)

One other thing: We're close to getting metallurgy (just 6 more turns - thanks to generous funding by the Babylonians and the Persians :), which means we can get cannons if we want to. Should we take some cannons with us in our campaign against the Iroquois? I've never been overly impressed by the things, what do you guys think?

Marius, 9/22/02
This is looking really good. :)

Cannons, though... bleh.  I hate the things.  I say we build more knights.
Berrys, 9/26/02
Well, sorry about the delay. This could also have gone a lot better for us - here's the latest:

1160 AD (1) - The new King Berrier II surveys his kingdom and reviews the battle plan put forward by King Stormboy for the destruction of the godless Iroquois. Seeing that it seems to be a good plan, a platoon of Musketeers are loaded into a caravel and ordered to sail to Ganogeh and await sabotage instructions.

1170 AD (2) - Paris completes the Sorbon University and starts recruiting knights for the forthcoming batle. News reaches Paris that the Iroquois are building Magellan's Voyage.

1180 AD (3) - King Berrier orders that the noxious jungle surrounding Kente be chopped down.

1190 AD (4) - Besancon completed courthouse, starts library.

1200 AD (5) - Orleans completes Bank, starts knight. Lyons completes knight. Avignon completes harbor, starts musketman. Some pikemen are promoted to musketeers in honour of their valuable contributions to the security of the nation.

1210 AD (6) - Chartres completes bank, starts knight. Paradise completes cathedral, starts knight. A road is completed to the saltpetre mines situated near Avignon. Knight buildup continues near Allegheny and Akwesasne. Our scientists have mastered the arts of Metallurgy, and at the strong insistence of King Berrier they start researching Military Tradition.

1220 AD (7) - Grenoble completes market place, starts knight. Paris completes knight. Jungle cleared near Kente, start road. Our landing parties are now in place.

1230 AD ( 8 ) - Move saboteurs into position near Ganogeh. Montezuma demands that we give him a gift of the secrets of Navigation. King Berrier, impetuously tells the Aztec envoys where to get off - they declare war :( Never the less, the people love King Berrier so much they expand his palace - they build nice big columns with statues of all the Kings of the Berrio/Berrier line.

1240 AD (9) - Hiawatha demands we remove our troops. The unloyal people of Dijon defect to the Aztecs :( Our saboteur musketman near the Iroquois horses is killed :( Our glorious armies take Allegheny and Akwesasne. Longbows chase off knights near the iron mines at Lyons. The Iroquois Iron and ivory supplies are successfully cut at Ganogeh.

1250 AD (10) - Yippee!!! We enter a golden age! The people admire King Berrier so, so, so much that they plant a rather nice garden for him. The Iroqouis retake Allegheny :( News reaches Paris that the Babylonians and Persians are building Smiths Trading Company. Our glorious armies take Huexotla from Aztecs. The Iroquois Iron supplies are cut near Grand River. Our saboteurs are killed near Ganogeh (Jeez! Veteran Musketmen killed by regular spears :/ Ho, hum). King Berrier is fatally wounded in the battle to retake Allegeheny, his dying orders are that the French fleet go in search of the "others" rumoured to exist on the other side of the vast oceans.

Typical isn't it? We're just in place to attack the Iroquois and the damned Aztecs declare war on us, and also at the point when it was very difficult to back out of the Iroquois offensive. The good thing is that the Aztecs are miles away and can only attack us by boat, so we can probably take over all the of the Paradise peninsula and get peace with Montezuma fairly quickly.

The fighting for Allegheny was pretty fierce - both us and the Iroquois lost a lot of units.

Our gold situation is pretty bad because I upgraded a number of pikemen to musketeers and hurried a couple of knights. The good bit is that we're in a golden age so our gold is +81 per turn at the moment and our science spending can probably be cut to 60% and still get Military Tradition in 4-5 more turns.

I was really pissed off about not being able to cut the supply of horses, but our Musketman fought valliantly, beating off three knights before finally being killed. At least the Iron supplies are cut (for now). I was also ULTRA annoyed at the game engine - I mean, two  Veteran musketmen should NOT die to regular spearmen!

The Iroquois have made contact with the English, so our plans for being global power brokers have suffered a bit of a dent. They can't be too far away though, so I have sent our two ships off to try and find them, or the other two for that matter.
